Title: PUBLIC SAFETY FUND PEDESTRIAN SAFETY PROJECTS COUNCIL INITIATIVE ADDRESSED: Improve transportation systems CITY ATTORNEY REVIEW: N/A SUMMARY STATEMENT: The Public Safety Fund was created to receive revenue from the previous photo enforcement program, pay program expenses and pay for projects to upgrade school zones, improve pedestrian safety. The City Council later decided to pay for the Longview Police Department Phase 2 Remodel project from the Public Safety Fund. Bids were opened recently and contracted awarded to complete the Police Department remodel project. With those costs now known to a greater degree of confidence, city council direction is needed regarding additional pedestrian safety improvements requested by the Longview School District and community members. Staff will review the estimated Public Safety Funds available and the requested projects. SUMMARY STATEMENT:

The Public Safety Fund was created to receive revenue from the previous photo enforcement program, pay program expenses and pay for projects to upgrade school zones, improve pedestrian safety.  The City Council later decided to pay for the Longview Police Department Phase 2 Remodel project from the Public Safety Fund.

 

Bids were opened recently and contracted awarded to complete the Police Department remodel project.  With those costs now known to a greater degree of confidence, city council direction is needed regarding additional pedestrian safety improvements requested by the Longview School District and community members.  Staff will review the estimated Public Safety Funds available and the requested projects.

   

FINANCIAL SUMMARY:

Staff estimates the Public Safety Fund will have a fund balance of $750,000 at the end of 2017.  Over $3,916,000 in pedestrian safety improvements have been requested by the school district and community members.

 

RECOMMENDED ACTION:

Direction to staff regarding which pedestrian safety improvement projects to complete.
